Hong Kong will get a reprieve from the recent hot weather early next
week, but it may come in the form of a typhoon.
Hong Kong News

A low pressure area in the central part of the South China Sea will
intensify and move northwards towards Hong Kong on Monday, according to
the Observatory.

The weather forecaster said it would consider issuing a typhoon warning
signal on Sunday.

Wet weather is expected to continue in the latter half of the week due
to an “active southwesterly airstream”.

If a warning signal is issued, it would be the first of the year. Last
year’s first signal was issued on May 26.

The Hong Kong Observatory upgraded the typhoon signal from No 1 to No 3
at 10.40am on Monday as Tropical Cyclone Merbok approached the city.

The Observatory said that, depending on Merbok’s movement and intensity
changes, it would consider later on Monday afternoon if there was a need
to raise the typhoon signal to No 8.

As of 11am, Merbok was estimated to be about 210km south-southeast of
Hong Kong. It was forecast to be moving north-northwest at about 20km/h
towards the coast of Guangdong.

“According to the current forecast track, Merbok is expected to make
landfall within 100km of Hong Kong at about midnight tonight,” the
Observatory announced on Monday.

Bus stops and MTR stations are packed with commuters rushing home, while
Cathay Pacific expects flight cancellations and delays

Full story:
http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/2097971/hong-kong-observatory-issues-typhoon-signal-no-8

The Hong Kong Observatory issued the typhoon signal No 8 at 5.20pm on
Monday as Tropical Cyclone Merbok, the city’s first major storm event of
the year, drew closer.

At 5pm, Merbok was estimated to be about 90km south-southeast of Hong
Kong, and headed towards the coast of Guangdong at a speed of about 20km/h.

“In the past few hours, local winds were strengthening as Merbok
continued to edge closer to Hong Kong,” the Observatory said in an
announcement.

“According to the current forecast track, Merbok is expected to make
landfall within 50km of Hong Kong before midnight. Its centre may even
pass over Hong Kong, bringing gales and heavy rain to parts of the
territory. Members of the public should stay on the alert.”

The No 1 standby signal was issued on Sunday night, and raised to the No
3 strong wind signal on Monday morning.
