Cyclone Alcide to threaten Madagascar into next week

Alcide, the first named storm of the 2018-2019 southwest Indian Ocean
cyclone season, will remain a dangerous tropical cyclone and will impact
areas from Madagascar to Reunion and Mauritius in the coming days.

This tropical threat will remain over the open ocean through Sunday,
creating rough seas across the region.

The formation of Alcide marks an early start to the tropical season in
the southwestern Indian Ocean, as the normal start date is Nov. 15.

Alcide rapidly strengthened since forming at midweek, peaking on
Thursday with winds equal to a Category 3 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean.

Alcide has since weakened into a severe tropical storm with winds equal
to a tropical storm in the Atlantic Ocean.

The tropical system is expected to remain over the open ocean into this
weekend as it sits just east of northern Madagascar.

As Alcide stalls the heaviest rainfall and strongest winds will remain
over the open ocean; however, occasional gusty squalls will occur across
northeast Madagascar.
