![]() After a slightly wamer than normal September , Peak Foliage season has begun across the north country. (albeit, a touch later than usual) The 3-C (clear, calm, cool) weather of the last 7 - 10 days should set the "leaf show" off further southward ... I've heard hypotheses from many that this foliage season should be better than the past few, which overall have been somewhat lackluster... (probably due to the preceeding dry summers) which stressed the trees. It would appear that this year, the plentiful rainfall, should have kept most of the the trees in good condition. Couple that with the ideal conditions of the last week, will this be a season to remember? http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?B... AG=461&rfi=9 Across the far north country (canadian border-adirondacks of NY, into northern Maine)... the leaves are near or passing peak... and so far... somewhat mixed reports... some people report stunning colors.. (best in years, sort of reports), while in other areas... once again, drab and not so interesting. Time will tell, (and shortly at that)... http://www.yankeemagazine.com/foliage/map/ , for those interested in keeping track -- ************************************************** *********** Eric Metronews Meteorologist "the words we mean most, are those we never say" -- This article was auto-posted by the ne.weather.moderated Weatherbot program. Lovely photo. I like it when there's still green to set off the colors.

This season has to me so far been very strange, but it is also the first leaf season that I have really been paying close attention to the details. First, it has been extraordinarily late; usually by now here 75% of the leaves are on the ground, and right now I am still almost 50% green. There seems to be more color in the mountain valleys than on the mountains themselves. There are some nice pockets around here but the color overall isn't that impressive. It's still much better than last year though -- we basically had no foliage last year, it all just dried up and fell off. Here's a shot taken near my place of one of the better color areas, on Sept. 30... http://www.PCGuide.com/pers/mtsnow030930.jpg Yet on Tuesday I went up to the Stratton area and they are far from peak, and in Bennington it still looks almost like August. peace, -*- charles -- This article was auto-posted by the ne.weather.moderated Weatherbot program. With the substantial rainfall, cold nights, and mild days, I'd agree
that the potential for a great foliage season exists, but so far it's been slow in developing. As of now I'd say we're at about 50% of peak here in central NH. We spent several hours on Squam Lake yesterday (~600 ft elevation), and the foliage was on par with what we've seen in mid/late September. Today we drove up to Stinson Lake; some of the foliage at the highest elevations (~1800-2000 ft) on the Stinson Road was past prime, and much of the remaining foliage in the surrounding area was somewhat muted.
