Default Its tru(ant)...Yet another brief WX quiz!

in article , Jot Ross at wrote
on 11/9/02 10:57 AM:

Within sight of Brewster the WX Catıs seaside manor is a fine view of
Catamount, a mountain named in honor of his late Great Uncle Lynx. In
start contrast to our WX Cat, Uncle was no scholar. In fact, he was known
to have skipped school far more often than he attended. Appropriately, his
nickname as a lad was ³The Missing Lynx.²

One day, while gazing nostalgically at Catamount, Brewster noticed that the
base of a cumulus cloud was at the same level as the mountain top. The temp
at that time was 68F while the dewpoint was 45F. With just that
information, the amazing feline was able to compute the approximate height
of Catamount. Approximately how many feet high is this mountain?

Two clues:
(1) As parcels of air rise, they cool adiabatically (due solely to decrease
in atmospheric pressure) at a rate of about 5.4 degrees (f) per 1000 feet.
(2) Not as well known but crucial to the solution of this quiz is the fact
that the dewpoint of a parcel of air decreases at a rate of approximately 1
degree (f) per 1000 feet as the pressure exerted upon the parcel decreases
with increased height.

About 5200 feet?

(Is it just a matter of finding the altitude at which the dewpoint = the
temp or am I missing something?

In that case the temp is 68 - 5.4*h and the dewpoint is 45 - 1*h (h is
altitude in multiples of 1000 feet). They are equal when h is about 5.2)
