Seven tornadoes hit plains

House destroyed in Elbert Co.; no serious injuries are reported

At least seven tornadoes ripped through the plains Monday evening, one
obliterating a house and a barn in Elbert County and another making a
showstopping march across Interstate 70 west of Limon.

No one was seriously hurt by the violent weather. Elbert County Sheriff
William Frangis said the occupants of the home destroyed 12 miles north
of Simla have all been accounted for.

By 9:30 p.m. the National Weather Service had counted seven tornadoes
spawned by a storm system that blew up in the early evening.

The storm line moved northeast from there, staying in sparsely inhabited
areas.

The closest it came to a population center was six miles north of Limon,
where tornado season usually delivers an annual reminder of the 1990
storm that ripped up Main Street and destroyed hundreds of buildings.

This time, one twister lingered on the ground for 30 to 50 minutes while
it beat up a garage and some trees and blew down some power lines then
stomped across I-70 at Cedar Point.
