Recentl;y, I discovered an excellent website at http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/map/
(Climate Diagnostic Center) which contains oodles of historical data which stats nerds such as I can not get enough of! Below is a simple table of 5 year averages of annual mean temps for Ashland and vicinity. I extracted these data from contour maps drawn in 1/2 degree Celsius intervals and converted to F. 1951 to 1955 49 1956 to 1960 47 1961 to 1965 46 1966 to 1970 47 1971 to 1975 47 1976 to 1980 46 1981 to 1985 47 1986 to 1990 47 1991 to 1995 47 1996 to 2000 47 Note that the warmest 1/2 decade was 1951 to 1955 at 49 degrees. The coldest 1/2 decades were 1961 to 1965 and 1979 to 1980 at 46 degrees. Of interest, however is that after a one degree warmup at 1981 to 1985, mean temp (at least to the nearest 1 degree F) has remained constant through 1996 to 2000. (The mean for the3 year interval 2001 - 2003 is also 47F degrees). Of course, this simplistic analysis does not either prove or disproval global warming. However, it is interesting and I think noteworthy, that at least for poor old Jotspot who has lived in Ashland, MA since 1983, no hint of global warming. The annual mean temperatures for Ashland and vicinity for the period 1951-2000 is but a small fraction of a much larger collection of data that does not support job security in this field. Interesting post and interesting response!
Why aren't these facts brought out in the general press? (Well, I have an idea!). At any rate, Accu weather's bold predicition of a colder-than-normal December for the east could be in jeopardy as there is no sign of hi-lat blocking until at least the middle of the month. I'm getting tired of rain and windstorms already! "Louis Gentile" wrote in message om... Jot Ross wrote in message ... Well, we had about two inches of snow in Wells, ME today...drove down to
Kittery to start Christmas shopping and it was partly sunny...people were staring at my car wondering where the snow came from..... It didn't last long, but it was a pretty sight. I used to live in Kittery (Badger's Island) and got my (now) 18 1/2
year old cat from a shelter 'round there. What in tarnation kind of shopping do they have in that podunk town that makes it worth driving down there? Don't get me wrong, I liked the place (outside of working 30 hours per day for the Navy at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard), but I never remember it as a bastion of Xmas shopping. Have things changed since the mid 1980's? LOL...I stand corrected. It's hard to see those outlet malls from the
inside of a dry-docked submarine, especially when the periscope is "tagged out" for maintenance...then again, irradiated bachelors with too much money for their own good, but not enough time to spend it, don't have a lot of use for outlet malls. A wife and two kids later sure makes me miss that money!!!
