Do you realise that it's possible global warming could trigger an ice age?

Yes, I have seen a bunch of studies on historical ice core and other
data and on proposed methods for how that might happen such as the
greenland current / ice interactions.

On the other hand, we do not know for a fact that such causes are
the only way ice ages can start, they might well also evolve
out of other conditions rather than as an extreme destabilization
after a warming.

Far too many people focus on 'what's the CO2 emissions doing' and
miss the bigger question, which is 'what's the global environment
doing as a whole and why'. Modern civilization may have arisen
because we hit an extended relatively stable temperate period
and the results of that ending, either naturally or due to manmade
forcing, could be catastrophic to the worldwide population.
We need to know not just what does added CO2 do but how the global
mechanisms work now and historically have been different.

Yes, and this may be the best result of the current 'global warming'
kerfluffle, as real paleoclimatology research is getting funded.

Unfortunately, it can be hard to distinguish the real researchers from
the 'political scientists' with an axe to grind, especially the
anti-industrial ones and their leftie opportunist politico-hangers-on.
Speaking as a totally unbiased observer GG.

Does someone have a pointer(s) to a recent, unbiased review article on
the causes of major climate changes?

Unbiased reviews on this topic are hard to find. However, the vast majority
of the meteorological community has come down on one side of the issue. The
remaining handful of a % seem to be the ones with axes to grind. To figure
out which side is which, see what sorts of Nat'l Academy studies have been
squelched by the GW Bush Admin. This is the official scientific voice of the
US, and Bush is rather quick to ignore it on a vast number of issues,
especially where the interests of the environment conflict with those of big
business. But this is no surprise, really.

GW ruined any credibility he had on environmental issues when he mentioned
the term "healthy forests initiative" in his state of the union address...a
blatant lie if I ever heard one.

Cheers!
John
