Default The Iron Age

"A little over ten years ago at a lecture at the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution, oceanographer John Martin stood up and said
in his best Dr. Strangelove accent, “Give me a half tanker of iron, and
I will give you an ice age.”"

Funny to think that I was influenced by him indirectly when walking on a
sandy beach noticing the fact that shellfish were so choosey about where
they lived.

I'd heard about the cleansing action that mussels perform on foul water
and that their presence at rivers mouths meant that toxic levels of
heavy metals would drop. And could see for myself that the streams along
the beach I walked in those days, fed iron (from mines long worked out)
to the sea, supplying much needed nutrition to the shellfish.

Now we have satellite imagery showing us the algae blooms around our
coasts from here to China all saying the same thing.
