Typhoon Feared to Hit Peninsula Weekend By Lee Jin-woo Staff Reporter Following last week’s Typhoon Megi, the nation is expected to encounter another massive typhoon called Chaba this weekend. As of Friday morning, Typhoon Chaba, which is approaching the southeastern sea some 600km off Okinawa, is likely to shift its course to the northwest and land on the Korean peninsula this weekend or early next week, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). A KMA meteorologist said Friday Typhoon Chaba is powerful enough to influence over 700km of its surrounding area. It is necessary for citizens to take precautions against the possible damages of the typhoon, he said. ``It is still not easy to predict the exact course of the typhoon. But, it is expected to strongly influence the peninsula due to its massive power, whether it moves toward Japan or Korea,’’ he added. ``It is important to check the course of the typhoon closely, especially from Saturday, so that we can minimize the possible damages.’’ In addition, the period between Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 has traditionally shown the highest sea level of the year, forecasting the high risk of storm waves near Cheju island and other islets across the southern and southwestern sea coasts. |
