Default Question from an ignorant person about Mt.St. Helens

"RENABORNEY" wrote in message

The usual question, how about postings citations from reputatble sources to
back your assertions.

I got mine from an half remembered article in the Nat Geo sometime in
the early 1970's and I am not even sure the article was published in
that decade. I remember there was a lot of newly released info around at
that time -upsetting a lot of applecarts.

May we take it that your input is accurate?

If so, all we need to round it off is the appropriate weather data and
that (as we all know) will put the matter about the effect of volcanic
activity on the weather to rest.

Or not,

...... as the case may be.

Not

The amount of material injected into the atmosphere in a major
volcanic eruption makes a nuclear weapon look like a wet
firecracker. The Krakatoa explosion of 1883 is estimated
to have ejected between 10 and 100 cubic kms of material.

And Krakatoa is considered to have been of medium size,

Look at the effects of the 1815 Tambura(??) explosion and the
535 AD explosion of Krakatoa.

In the 1815 event we had "the year with no summer", crop
failures and massive world wide dust coverings.

The 535 event caused crop failures for the period 535-538, which
resulted in massive plagues, population movements, the collapse
of the Roman and Mayan Empires, and other interesting events as
people starve.

And then there is Yellowstone.

Although the Krakatoa explosion of 1883 put stuff into the stratosphere
that produced amazing winter displays of polar stratospheric clouds at
temperate latitudes for several years afterwards. Described in Nature
and other journals for the first time in 1884.

Look at the effects of the 1815 Tambura(??) explosion and the
535 AD explosion of Krakatoa.

I can't find any references to similar PSC displays after Tambora
despite it being larger and having a much more pronouced cooling effect
on the troposphere. Anyone have any pointers to records of PSC displays
in 1816-18?

The ultimate safety valve - when things get really desparate with global
warming you could save the Earth from overheating by provoking
Yellowstone to erupt. Not good for US real estate values though.
