![]() " The massive west Antarctic ice sheet, previously assumed to be stable, is starting to collapse, scientists warned on Tuesday " New Scientist article - link below: http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6962 Any comments on this? Too early to say for certain, but this is obviously not good news. -Eric B |

If it is posible to start colonising the continent it means good news does it not. What is obviously bad news is that we have millions of people dying of illnesses that can be cured fairly easily on other parts of the planet .......AND ARE NOT LOOKING AFTER THEM BETTER! So the need for another continent to live on is not great at first sight. However if the dead are to be resurrected or people from Venus are to be welcomed.... How much research has been done investigating the aquifers in the area and how much they might expand when the ice clears. It is well known that before sea water levels can rise all the other aquifers will have to be fully replenished. By all accounts (anecdotal stuff of course) the storms the so called experts say global warming will cause will take care of that. You do know that such a solution has been factored into the equations they use? -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |

Observations show that global sea level has risen over the past century, yet aquifer levels have been dropping. The previous post I believe is misguided. Sea levels are of course rising at 2.56 mm/year. http://www.jason.oceanobs.com/images...is/niv_moy.gif However, I was suprised to see that aquifier depletion could acount for as much as 20% (0.5mm/year) of the observed rise. IPCC lists anthropocentric factors as 'min' and 'max', And other factors seem to balance 'groundwater mining', though not exactly inspiring confidence in the numbers. Given that ground water use grows with population, seems likely that we are at 0.5mm/year and growing for aquifier contribution to sea level rise. http://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc_tar/wg1/420.htm#tab118 -- When the Rapture comes, can I have your car?
