Default Fwd: The Met Office Monthly Tropical Cyclone Summary

10 May 2005

One man was killed and two seriously injured yesterday in Hong Kong when
typhoon-strength winds blew over 23 giant shipping containers, the
Associated Press reports.

The man's truck was crushed by three containers at the container
terminal during the thunderstorm, which brought gusts of more than 83
miles per hour, said fire services department spokesman Tony Leung.

A government spokesman, Raymond Wong, said that two other drivers were
injured. One was admitted to hospital in a critical condition, whilst
the other was stable.

Meteorologists said that a trough of low pressure caused the
thunderstorm.

"It's just like a jet of water hitting the ground but there is no way
out," Leung Wing-mo, senior scientific officer at the Hong Kong
Observatory, told the South China Morning Post.

The extreme winds are not common in Hong Kong according to the
Observatory, which published figures in January claiming that
high-density urban development had caused wind speeds in the country to
decrease at a rate of 1.04 miles per hour per decade between 1986 and
2004.

I had expected the phenomenon due to be volcanic but still never mind.
Sad for the bloke killed and his family though.
