Default Second Warmest April in 126 Land and Sea Years.

During the month of April "James" continued to cut and post
fossil fool drivel on the alt.global-warming newsgroup. He
even had the ignorance and poor taste to post a piece from
Wingnut Daily that blamed both the eugenics movement and
The Holocaust on environmentalists and climate scientists!
Meanwhile, global mean surface temperatures continue to rise.

These globally averaged temperature data come from NASA:
http://www.giss.nasa.gov/data/update...LB.Ts+dSST.txt
They represent the results of tens of millions of readings
taken at thousands of land stations and ships around the globe
over the last 126 years. Yes, the land data are corrected for
the urban heat island effect. The sea data do not need to be.
There are few urban centers in the sea.

The Mean April temperature over the last 126 years is 13.967 C.
The Variance is 0.05839.
The Standard Deviation, or SIGMA, is 0.2416.

Rxy 0.795791 Rxy^2 0.633283
TEMP = 13.631517 + (0.005287 * (YEAR-1879))
Degrees of Freedom = 124 F = 214.135236
Confidence of nonzero correlation = approximately
0.9999999999999999999999999999 (28 nines), which is darn close to 100%!

The month of April in the year 2005,
is linearly projected to be 14.298,
yet it was 14.59. -- 1.2 SIGMA above linear
projection!
(Got that Charlew2?)
The sum of the residuals is 14.973855

Exponential least squares fit:
TEMP = 13.634823 * e^(.0003770 * (YEAR-1879))
The sum of the residuals is 14.923699

The most recent 134 continuous months, or 11 years and 2 months,
on this GLB.Ts+dSST.txt data set are all above the 1951-1980
data set norm of 14 C.
There are 1504 months of data on this data set:
-- 638 of them are at or above the norm.
-- 866 of them are below the norm.
This run of 134 months above the norm is the result of a warming
world. It is too large to occur by chance at any reasonable level
of confidence. A major volcano eruption, thermonuclear war, or
meteor impact could stop this warming trend for a couple of years,
otherwise expect it to continue.

Thanks, Roger.

Does the NASA site also say anything about associated weather events
that might have gone along with this unusually warm April?
Any sense that it's affecting, or being affected by, unusual rainfall
patterns or droughts in any part of the world? Or is NASA focusing
solely on the average land and average sea temperatures?

Here is some data on "extreme" weather events in April compiled by the
US government's National Climactic Data Center.

I don't know how unusual these events are in historic context, or
how fair it is to connect them with rising global temperatures.

But here's some of what the NCDC is saying about the month:

************************************************** ******
Global Hazards And Significant Events

April 1-28, 2005
(Page last updated April 28, 2005)

A multi-year drought continued through parts of the Greater Horn of
Africa during April 2005. Additional information can be found below.

Drought & Heat | Flooding | Storms | Tropical Cyclones | Extratropical
Cyclones | Severe Winter Weather

A multi-month period of wet weather across southwestern areas of the
United States ameliorated drought conditions in areas of California,
Arizona and New Mexico. Extreme to exceptional drought persisted
farther north throughout portions of the northern and central Rockies.

Long-term drought continued across areas of the Greater Horn of Africa
(eastern Kenya, southeastern Ethiopia, northern/central Somalia and
Djibouti) and southern Africa. In Kenya, two million people were in
need of food aid (WFP). Widespread crop failure over much of
Mozambique, southern and eastern Zimbabwe, as well as adjacent parts
of Malawi and South Africa was the result of less than half the normal
rainfall during the rainy season.

For the latest African analysis and forecast, see the Famine Early
Warning System Network.

Across Australia, rainfall deficiencies since January 2005 enhanced
drought conditions across much of Western Australia southeastward into
New South Wales. Please refer to the early April drought statement from
the Australian Bureau of Meteorology

Drought across Thailand is reportedly the worst in seven years. Two
million hectares (5.2 million acres) of farmland have been damaged,
while causing $191 million (USD) in economic losses. More than 9
million people in 71 of Thailand's 76 provinces have been affected by
water shortages. Government-sponsored cloud seeding operations were
employed as an attempt to mitigate the drought conditions (Associated
Press).

In the United States, heavy rainfall in the Northeast produced flooding
in parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Severe flooding
along the Delaware River forced the evacuation of 6,000 residents in
New Jersey and over 5,700 in Pennsylvania during the weekend of the
2nd-3rd. Around 3,200 homes in New Jersey were damaged, while one
fatality was reported in New York (Associated Press).

Across Zanzibar Island off the coast of Tanzania, heavy rains
associated with showers and thunderstorms during April 17-19 produced
heavy flooding described as the worst in 40 years. At least 150
familes lost their homes due to the flooding (IFRC).

In Romania, flooding in the northern and western parts of the country
damaged thousands of homes and submerged 30,000 hectares (75,000
acres) of farmland. More than 140 towns were affected by the flooding,
which prompted government officials to issue a regional state of
emergency (AFP).

Heavy rain in the Somali region of Ethiopia during April 21-23
producing flooding that caused 40 fatalities (OCHA).

In the Indonesian province of Aceh, flooding rains were responsible for
15 deaths and the destruction of 490 homes in the village of Lawe
Mengkudu on the 26th. (AFP).

Thunderstorms erupted on April 6 and produced severe weather
including 32 reports of tornadoes, most of which touched
down in Mississippi and Louisiana. Between 20 and 25 homes were
destroyed and 7 people were injured. Mississippi governor Haley
Barbour declared a state of emergency (CNN) ....

Roger, the fool, still denies the eugenics analogy by continually posting
temperatures which means nothing. No proof that these temps are
anthropogenic or natural. Just temps. Somehow, we are to assume these temps
are all the fault of SUVs, evil energy companies and capitalism in general.
His insistence is boring with conjecture akin to area51 reports and he
relies on his son's middle school science report to prove it once and for
all.

My teeny experiment with the heat island effect went with a wave of the hand
and explained away as taken into account. The arrogance is unbelievable,
shows bias and is worthless.

James, I assume that you find the IPCC reports to be arrogant and
worthless as well?

And that you don't think it's important that thousands of different
temperature observations, averaged by NASA, show this April to have
been the second warmest ever recorded?

That's why people have their teeny experiments published.
