Glaciers melting at 100 meters a day, and accelerating!!

By CLARKE CANFIELD, Associated Press

Two University of Maine scientists studying the effects of climate
change in the Arctic have discovered that two glaciers in Greenland are
moving at a not-so-glacial pace.

The scientists returned last week from a five-week expedition to the
east coast of Greenland, where they studied the movement of five
glaciers. They found that two of the glaciers are moving at far faster
rates than just a few years ago, raising questions about the effects of
regional warming.

One glacier, called Kangerdlugssuaq, was moving at the rate of nearly 9
miles a year, making it one of the world's fastest-moving glaciers, the
researchers said. In the late 1990s, it was moving at about 3.5 miles a
year.

"It's a bit alarming because the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica
are so large that it usually takes thousands of years for these types
of changes to actually occur, not five or 10 years," said Gordon
Hamilton, a professor at the university's Climate Change Institute.

The glaciers' accelerated speeds in Greenland suggest that the climate
is warming up [ . . . ]

Hamilton said he and other scientists are well aware of skeptics who
downplay the notion of global warming. But the consensus in the
scientific community, he said, is that climate change is not only real,
it is probably caused by humans.

"Every critic has a different argument on why climate change is a myth
or is made up," he said. "But speaking in general terms, the scientific
evidence is that climate change has human origins."

""The remarkable thing is that at least three (and almost certainly more)
glaciers, widely separated around Greenland, are all accelerating more or
less at the same time,""

How many glaciers are there on Greenland? The ones talked about here are
said to be around 5 miles wide and 1/2 mile thick, is that average or would
these be the few largest?

I thought you had all the answers, Einstein?!

Truth be told, glaciers have been in retreat ever since the last Ice
Age. That they are accelerating in melting is only evidence that they
are accelerating perhaps due to increased temperature. If temperatures
decrease, they may stop accelerating.

Quit jumping to conclusions. 20 years in geological time is like a
millisecond.

Hey, thanks for that! I thought they were accelerating because the green
cheese that makes up the money is starting to spoil.

Quit jumping to conclusions. 20 years in geological time is like a

And yet a fraction of a geological second can alter human existence
irreversably. Quite remarkable, eh?

A lie Ray.

That they are accelerating in melting is only evidence that they
are accelerating perhaps due to increased temperature. If temperatures
decrease, they may stop accelerating.

You don't know what you're talking about, Ray. Most glaciers have been stable
or advancing until recently.

A lie Ray.

Well, applicable to ice sheets ( reading the evidence from the previous
interglacials. During these periods the 'rapid' retreat from the end of the
glaical period slows down but does not stop. ) However, I doubt if Ray is
making that point.

Mountain glaciers, yes. Mostly controlled by regional climate factors that
determine their growth/decline on a much shorter time basis than ice sheets.

Oh, that makes sense. Green cheese that makes up the moon. Money is
more logical though.

Idiot, quit replying to my trolling. You're wasting "valuable
bandwidth". Remember that lie, back when the Internet was controlled
by academia? I've been trolling since 1992, and one thing I've learned
is that there are ALWAYS two sides to every story. Always.

The problem with you AGW polemicists is that you fail to even give the
appearance of neutrality. It actually hurts your cause, if your cause
is to persuade people. James is right--the Earth Scientists have lost
the trust of society, and now are just another political action group.
