My guess is that after the next few years, volcano and earthquake folks will HAVE to realize how important they are to each other. Maybe problem lies with funding. I've always wondered why the two groups are not more "integrated".

Flaugher,

The problem isn't with funding and it never has been. Anyone who
seriously believes that needs to take off the rose colored glasses.
What's lacking is in education or training as to how to collect those
dollars. The government isn't the only cash kow in the world.
Excuses.... excuses!

I could tell you how, but I've done it before and someone profitted
from my advice and I haven't seen a thank you for it yet. And I don't
expect one at any time in the future either. One of these days I'm
going to look that person in the eye and ask "so how that's money
factory going?"

As for the rest, you'd have to ask the professionals.

Professionals?

Do you mean geologists?

Theory is all very well in its place but when it stands in the way of
science, no amount of funding will give it more than credence.

Truth is beyond religious misconception.

Hi Mike,

Faughter said he thought volcano and earthquake experts should work
together. Insofar as I know, they usually do, but I could be wrong
because I'm not a professional.

However, in regard to getting money for projects, there is more than
one way; but it is frequently used as an excuse because those who need
it just lack the training in how to get it. Let's see.... how many
people became multi-millionaires who work or worked at Google three
years ago? Do any of them have an interest in science?.... Oh, those
non-profit organizations who fund other non-profits...... How many
CEO's at Fortune 500 companies have an interest in some area of
science? It's a lot like endorsing car racers or race cars. Who
wants to be the FIRST IN? Just to name a few...

The Truth Is Out There, the problem is getting IT down here. I think
that filtering process in the brain sifts out most of the good stuff
and what we have now is the leavings. Did I miss anything?

Petra

Volcanos can cause earthquakes, but earthquakes don't cause

As so often, there is an exception - there are lots of report of
"mud volcanos" being shaken into increased activity by earthquakes.
Since they can be hundreds of metres high (even on-shore ones!) with
seepages of gas and/ or oil from the summit to even add that little
element of flame to confuse people more.

Well, nothing in the world is absolute, except maybe mankinds
propensity for stupidity!

Martin Rowley wrote in another thread on another notice bard:

July, 2006 as a whole will go into the 'books' as a classic,
exceptionally warm summer month, with extended dry spells.

And finally, in many previous 'hot' spells, the visibility & sky clarity
has been moderate at best: this time around, visibilities have often
been good to excellent, with only temporary periods of 'milky' skies.

Most heat waves may do as you say but then they tend to end with
powerful earthquakes. This one ended with the alternative version:
"Thousands of Indonesians flee fearing volcano eruption after top alert
issued 07.28.2006, 08:20 AM

JAKARTA (XFN-ASIA) - Thousands of villagers have fled homes lying in
the path of red-hot lava flows trickling down from Indonesia's Mount
Karangetang as the volcano has been put on top alert, officials said.

The top alert status means scientists believe an eruption of the
volcano, one of Indonesia's most active, could be imminent.

More than 3,900 residents from five villages living around the slopes
of the 1,784-meter volcano were evacuated Thursday and Friday, said Boy
Rompas, a spokesman for the North Sulawesi provincial administration.

Saut Simatupang, a vulcanologist with the national vulcanology
monitoring office in West Java, said the top alert status was put in
place last Saturday due to increasing flows of lava and heat clouds.

As of Friday, the volcano's lava flow had stretched as far as 1.75
kilometres down the volcano's slopes, he said."

Not a lot. Leave the lemons on the trees. Let's get on with the real
work. Neither of us need much funding and I for one seem to thrive
without much adulation. Quite the reverse it appears.

Which is just as well.

Besides who is to say that if you had the money you would spend it
wisely and of course there is no guarantee of happiness with it.
