Central Pacific super typhoon Ioke is currently predicted by the
JTWC to make a direct hit on Wake Island: https://metoc.npmoc.navy.mil/jtwc/warnings/wp0106sa.gif Of course, that's still a couple of days away, so maybe it'll miss. Interesting long-lived system. It has been monitored since 20060816 when it was at about 10N 143W. It's now at 16N 177E. https://metoc.npmoc.navy.mil/jtwc/warnings/wp0106.tcw They were referring to it as "cp0106" until today (20060828) when it was changed to "wp0106". (But maybe that is just a glitch at the JTWC. They do seem to have some..., err..., careless staff there.) Cheers, Phred. -- LID |

Yeah, I thought that might be the case, but it doesn't seem to apply universally. And I'm still somewhat confused over the designations "ep", "cp", and "wp". If you can have a "cp" east of the date line; why not west of it too, if geographically relevant? In the past 4 years there have been around 70 named "ep" systems; a bit over 100 "wp"; and bugger all "cp" (at a guess, less than 5 -- and a couple of them may have been "sh" rather than "cp" anyway according to the JTWC classification of these things). Which leaves me wondering... why have a "cp"? Why not just "ep" and "wp"? A related issue is the naming of these systems. The ones I see usually retain the first name they get, even if they move into a different "zone"; but occasionally one will be renamed when it moves into the area of responsibility of another met service. If there's an applicable rule covering such things, I'd be interested to read it. Cheers, Phred. -- LID |
