Default Unusual and complex fog waves

I saw what seemed to me a very unique fog phenomenon off the coast of
Digby, Nova Scotia last week, and I managed to capture two images of
it:

I'm curious whether others have seen something like this, and whether
there's some known origin for this effect. Here's what I can say about
the circumstances:

The photo was taken at about 12 noon local time, from a ferry boat
crossing from Saint John, NB to Digby, NS, about 25' above the water,
at approximately the center of the following map (which shows the ferry
route)

The camera was pointing more or less East, at the coastline just to the
NE of the entry to the Annapolis Basin. On the passage across the Bay
of Fundy, the wind was more or less out of the NE, and the weather was
in the mid 50s, overcast with occasional rain and fog. Approaching
Digby, I could feel warmer air blowing from the interior, out of the
SE. This air would have been passing at right angles over the high
ridge of the coastline (and presumably down again) before hitting the
colder air over the bay. So my guess is that we're looking at
something having to do with the interface between that descending
warmer air from inland and the colder air right over the water. But
what would explain the strange, almost sinusoidal patterns?

The two images were taken about 10 s apart. The boat was moving, and
you can see some of the parallax between the various fog waves, which
were spread out and separated by some considerable space.

.... . . . j
