The old hierarchy had physics as the foundation for all science, then chemistry, then biology (and then psychology if you count it as a science). You need areas below yours, but not above yours. (I didn't include math here because it's more the language of science.) |

When I was an undergraduate at the Colorado School of Mines, there was only one biology course, and it was not mandatory for all students.
