How he ever got to that state without knowing anything of
animal classification, or being able to correctly subtract

Well, you'd have to be able to 'appreciate' an engineering
degree somehow in a different manner, I suppose..

As an aside, I believe it is possible to get an advanced degree in one
of the other sciences without taking any biology at all. Certainly it
is possible to get an engineering degree without ever taking a biology
course.

Chemistry too (as long as you don't specialize in biochemistry).
Ditto physics.

The old hierarchy had physics as the foundation for all science, then
chemistry, then biology (and then psychology if you count it as a
science). You need areas below yours, but not above yours. (I didn't
include math here because it's more the language of science.)

I kinda have my doubts as to that, in either physics or engineering..

speaking from experience, I GOT a civil engineering degree and never
took biology.

That's nothing to be bragging about..

When I was an undergraduate at the Colorado School of Mines, there was
only one biology course, and it was not mandatory for all students. I
don't know if it was mandatory for *any* of the majors.
