Default A New "Paul Ehrlich" Speaks And Will Be Just As Wrong

At least Guy R. McPherson, professor of conservation biology at the
University of Arizona, doesn't see the cannibals that Ted Turner warned
of:

At this point, I cannot imagine any steps that could allow us to avoid a
meltdown of the economy or a relatively rapid transition into the
post-industrial Stone Age. We depend on abundant, inexpensive oil for
delivery of food, water, shelter, and health care. The days of abundant,
inexpensive oil are behind us. American Empire will soon run its course.
I am hopeful we can save a few tens of millions of Americans. But we
will need to make massive changes in our entire way of life, starting
immediately. We must abandon the project of globalization and its
attendant indulgences, for example, and focus on saving lives.

What is it with this rash of apocalypse-mongers?

Why the hunger for their message again?

Why the despair that human ingenuity, which has got us so far, will
suddenly fail so catastrophically?

Interesting you mention Paul Ehrlich. I have a book of his from 1970. He was wrong on just about every
single point. It sounded convincing at the time though.

Actually he was right on the mark with virtually every one of his
statements. He just didn't correctly estiamte the time needed for the
effects of the overshoot of the planet's carrying capacity to be realized.

Over 100 million people have starved to death since Ehrlich wrote "The
Population Bomb". Which puts the bomb presicely on target.
