Default Sancho, Quixote, and Sea Ice

See: http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/index.html
----------------------------------------------------

“Sancho, the summer Arctic sea ice will melt in the next few years.”

“I know, Quixote. It’s awful. You need to get this information to the
public.”

“All I can is this, Sancho. For Junior and his friends, science is
their bitch and the media is their puppy.”

“That’s not something to be proud of, Quixote.”

“Depends on which side of the government committee you sit on,
Sancho.”

“Quixote, the melting sea ice is a tragedy. If the Arctic is ice free
in summer the devastation portends to be unlimited.”

“Sancho, what does that have to do with anything? Let me tell you the
real issue: Junior and his friends think it will take at least a
generation or so to negotiate the mineral and sea lane rights in the
Arctic. If we are ice free in less than a decade, their negotiating
position is useless. Global warming is really becoming an economic
problem. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Quixote, with Arctic albedo disappearing in the summer, it will make
a huge difference in the amount of heat retained by the planet. Global
warming will accelerate, maybe out of control. We have to take
substantive steps now--”

“Stop being an eco-terrorist--”

“Quixote, your friends are the real eco-terrorists. Your consumptive
economic system based on fossil fuels is outmoded. Your friends and
their nonsensical, megalomaniacal, self-aggrandizing behavior towards
our planet will certainly kill millions--and destroy our economy.”

“Prove it, Sancho.”

“The planet proves my point. Fund the transition to a sustainable
economic system as if it were a war. Do it now!”

“You mean cut CO2 output by 75%. That will never happen.”

“Quixote, you are an idiot. Don’t you see we are entering the triage
phase? How bad does it have to get before you and friends dislodge
their heads from their anal cavity?”

“Power has its perks. Why should we cut CO2 emissions by 75%?”

“Quixote, you boob, there is no question we will reduce the human CO2
output by 75%. Does it happen by plan or by tragedy? A steep
reduction in CO2 is a fait accompli, your friends have guaranteed it
with their childish response to change. We need to implement economic
redirection now. Our economic system is not sustainable and it won’t
protect anyone. Why don’t you get that?”

“Sancho, that kind of change will never happen, at least as long as my
friends run the roost. My friends hog-tie the scientists with skewed
funding requirements and when that doesn’t work they use political
pressure from lobbyists to bury any climate research they don’t like
with an absurd review process.”

“Sadly, you finally speak the truth.”

“And don’t expect to get the word out either. We own the media and we
own the pundits.”

“Well...most of the media, Quixote.”
