The PIE root is "per-" which is about "trying, "risking" and "going
through" --

The risk sense is probably seen most easily in the contemporary word
"peril".

The root has moved into Germanic derived languages as "far" "faere"
"fyr" and "fahr" -- compare the German "Gefahr" for danger.
Interestingly, the word "fahren" in German means "to drive" and
"führen" means to lead ... hence "Der Führer" (the leader)
