Sunspots are the apparent size of craters on the moon. The left panel shows a spotless Sun as it looks today. Please write to Al Gore so that Al knows that the Sun is not living up to his religious expectations. Al Gore is a divinity school dropout. George Carlin had a better grasp of the true nature of God's creation, than does Al Gore. Global jobless ranks to swell by 20% in 2009: ILO Last Updated: Thursday, March 5, 2009 | 11:35 AM ET CBC News The number of men and women without work could rise in 2009 by 38 million, or a number greater than Canada's entire population, according to a study released Thursday. The International Labour Office said the ranks of the world's jobless could swell to 231 million in the current year compared to 193 million in 2008, depending upon how much the global economy slows. If correct, the result would be a rise in the global jobless population by one-fifth, the office said. The ILO, which is a United Nations organization concerned with labour standards and other types of employment issues, released the report as part of International Women's Day. No growth In its forecast, the agency predicted that the world's gross domestic product will barely expand at all in 2009, up only 0.5 per cent for the year. "The labour market scenario for 2009 shows a deterioration in global labour markets for both men and women," the ILO said. Slowing growth, combined with improved productivity, often leads to fewer employed men and women, especially in developing regions where the potential for labour-saving innovations is more pronounced, economists said. By sex Breaking down the changes by gender, the ILO said that the number of females without work will rise by 16 million, reaching 97 million by the end of 2009. The jobless percentage for women will increase by more than one percentage point in the same year, reaching 7.4 per cent by the start of 2010. The unemployment rate for men will rise in the 12-month period as well, hitting 7.1 per cent, up from 6.0 per cent in 2008. In terms of absolute numbers, the number of male jobless will spike to 134 million in 2009, up from 112 million one year earlier, according to the ILO. |
