Afshan Khalid, 46, said her 8-year-old daughter tried to light a
candle before Earth Hour started at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

“She was lighting up the candle and we thought it didn’t light up or
the match fell somewhere that we didn’t notice and then we left,” said
Ms. Khalid. The family was going to see friends and when getting
ready, they lighted scented candles so they could see.

Platoon Chief Paul Hunter of the Mississauga Fire Department said the
fire caused an estimated $15,000 damage.

“Doesn’t look like much of a fire,” he said looking over the report on
the call. “ It was just a shelving unit.”

Concern for the environment doesn't protect you if you're careless any
better than if you're a reckless despoiler of the environment. Letting
small children use matches unsupervised and then assuming than when an
unanticipated result happens -- the candle doesn't light -- that it's
all hunky dory is simply careless.

I wonder how many careless people have died as a result of using
electricity or gas or motor vehicles carelessly. Had Tim Blair been
less keen on parading his hatred for the biosphere in general and its
friends in particular this thought might have penetrated the ossified
mass between his ears.
