Fairly obviously, there is a difference between serving one's
individual interest and the collective interest. A person who merely
want to solve his own aesthetic needs in the here and now would indeed
be far better off living in some idyllic rural off-grid setting
(assuming he or she could make a living in the place).

That's not a solution that could conceivably work for more than a
handful of people. Environmentalists favour making it possible for
highly urbanised people to live with the smallest possible footprint
consistent with people's reasonable expectations. We want to make the
world a better place, rather than seek out some realtively unspoiled
corner of it and erecting a keep out sign, and watching with
equanimity as the rest of the planet on which that corner stands goes
to hell.

I don't know whether Tim Blair is simply moronic, ignorant,
misanthropic, selfish or someone who tells whatever lies the polluters
think will fly, but your persistent repost of his trash in here simply
reminds reasonable people of the character of people you rub shoulders
with.
