Every account I ever read about the G.S. is that it starts out with "Momentum" a flow velocity of around 6 knots. It is so wide and deep that this momentum carries it for thousands of miles. There is much "splitting off." of the G.S. that often makes me wonder. The elevation of the Bay of Yucatan is one foot higher, IIRC,, than than the Atlantic Ocean at the point of discharge through a relative "constriction" opening which creates the beginning of the G.S. Encyclopedia Britannica is a good source on this, IIRC.. C. Bash. Finally, in Europe in particular, there is a fear of a reversal of the Gulf Stream and thus-paradoxically-the onset of very much colder weather. Although there is ample evidence of fluctuations in the strength of the Gulf Stream from time to time, research has shown no sign of any secular slowdown over the past decade. Nor is there any reason to suppose that there will be even if there is further global warming over the coming decades, since the Gulf Stream is largely a surface current and thus a wind-driven phenomenon. http://ipa.org.au/files/LAWSON_ClimateChange.pdf Lawson? Could that, perchance, be the father of Nigella Lawson, a famously failed politician who laid down groundwork for a current demise of the pound sterling, by pooh-poohing the idea of a European single currency. And now he's pontificating on another subject he has zero cognisance of. Whale Oil Beef Hooked! |
