A single, snappy, and short answer would be,
"You said the system was nonlinear, didn't you?"
To break it down further, here are
TWO ANSWERS:

1) There is a delay between the application
of CO2 to the atmosphere and the rise of
global mean surface temperatures of about
half a century.

2) The rising CO2 levels trigger positive
feedbacks.

Consult any climatology text written in the
last decade, the IPCC documents, Google,
Wikipedia, or many other references for details.
