Global temperature are not the only aspect of global temperatures.
The amount of specific heat held by the earth would be a better marker - amount of heat energy held by the atmosphere. the oceans, and the earth itself. The heat energy is counterbalanced by large ice mass along the northern and southern pole. The currents in the oceans moves the heat from the equator (the hottest points) to the northern and southern hemisphere (the cooler points). The melting and decrease of the polar ice caps is a better marker for a long term trend towards global warming. As the polar ice caps melt it may decrease or stop the global temperature from rising temporarily - just as an ice cube would for a glass of water. However, once the ice has melted away - any long term trend towards global warming would restart. Climatologists are puzzled as to why average global temperatures have stopped rising over the last 10 years. Some attribute the trend to a lack of sunspots, while others explain it through ocean currents." Please read entire article and comment. ----- David Christainsen - Meteorologist |
