"Scientists are always changing their story": that's called progress ... the reinterpretation, refinement or revision of a theory in light of new observations

"as a Conservative, I have no tolerance for ambiguity.": So I take it that you dont quite understand the meaning of uncertainty and the various methods used to quantify it ...
