You can get a reasonably accurate fit of the temperature anomaly since 1979 by fitting a linear plus sinusoidal function to the data. What we are seeing there is mainly ENSO noise around a warming signal. The troughs, with the most recent, as you say, at present, generally represent the La Ninas.
