Here's the funny thing I heard about him: He was the "local" weatherman on my all-news station in the San Francisco bay area: KCBS. He was on in the late 1970s and very early 1980s and always spoke of the weather as though he was living through it all.. like he was here in San Francisco. I learned a few years later than he was actually located in the Baltimore / DC area and wouldn't know a Pacific storm front if it kicked him in the ass.... he just had this friendly style that he personalized for whatever local weather forecast he was discussing. Cracked me up when I heard this because he sounded very familiar with the local towns, valleys, mountain ranges and the correct pronunciations of each. (That alone is remarkable, as many of our towns have spanish names, but aren't necessarily pronounced correctly. Pinole is "pin NOLE" and San Raphael is "san rah FELL". Gordon nailed all of them perfectly!) |

I remember him well growing up on Long Island, doing the weather segment on WCBS television, and AM radio "Newsradio 88" at 10:10 pm every night. They called him "Gordy" from Bermuda. It was past my bedtime, and I would listen to my little transistor radio on the pillow with the volume turned just low enough that no one else would hear and know that I was still awake. He piqued my interest in the weather as a child, an interest that I've maintained all my life. |
