Graham, general Met Office usage defines a gale in terms of both mean speed
and gusts. Hence a severe gale is either mean speed 45kts, or gusts 52kt, if

structural damage here in Reading. A few fences down, some branches maybe,

1. Silly boy, the Met Office is no longer in Berks.
2. Those winds are normal for winter in West Cornwall but not for Berks.
