Thanks for all the replies. I suspected my post wouldn't get an easy answer..
So in a nutshell (to answer my original question) no weather modelling saw this coming, and if anyone claims they did it...

Does anyone have any sensible answers to the so-called 13,000 mile contrail reported (amongst other places) in some tabloids on 25 Feb 2018 as seen on Google Earth?

Just seen on Met Office radar a very odd well-defined blob in the North Sea just off The Wash that suddenly appears at 1250. Is this some computer artefact? No doubt it will have gone by the time...
