I've given up on the BBC forecasts completely. They are as much use to me as
a chocolate teapot these days. I seem to get more accuracy from ITV local
ones and national. This is a huge shame: once the Met Office forecasts on
the BBC were something to be proud of, and now they are just cr*p. Huge
shame indeed.

Something which everyone on this planet should be able to do.

I've given up purposely watching *all* TV weather forecasts now, I may still
catch the odd one whilst watching Breakfast TV in the morning, but essentially
that's it. The Internet is now my number 1 source of information. I now tell all
my friends and aquaintances to do likewise, and the message is getting across
too!

Same here. It's sad really as I enjoyed watching the likes of McGaskill,
Fish and Giles in my youth and Francis Wilson on Breakfast Time. Even if the
'net' had been around then I'm sure I would've still kept up to date with
the majority of the main (1800, 2100 etc) TV weather bulletins.

I was PC-less for a week in January 2004 and was nearly suicidal :-p

My sentiments entirely. Having just heard Tori Good on R4,
where she wasted about a quarter of her precious 2 minutes telling what
a nice day it had been in places and not such a nice day in other
places and then waffled about chaotically so I really couldn't tell you
what tomorrow is going to be like anywhere, I am now totally convinced
that the best thing would be for the Met Office to write out the
forecast, fax or email it to the BBC, where it would be read out by an
announcer. This would eliminate the chaotic element in the chain of
transmission. As for TV, with its ludicrous graphics (they are not
maps) I just don't care. I never use it, except to have a peep every
now and again to see if things have improved.

It was actually wafflycat who wrote that, Gavin. I just posted the BBC
link. I don't disagree though.

Sorry Colin, it seems like we are all unanimous on this issue
I have to say, what I hate most about all this is that it seems that there
is a concerted attempt to treat everyone as though they are complete idiots,
why for heavens sake?

I suppose because they want the 10% of the audience who _are_ complete
idiots to be able to understand the forecast. But if as a result they
degrade the usefulness of the forecast for the other 90% then it's not a
very good idea.

May be at long last 'high' temperatures won't be given out as good for
everyone any more.

I'm generally in agreement with most of what's been written in this
thread but things may not be all bad. I like this bit, from a Met
Office spokesman:

He said: "High temperatures for most are a good thing, but for
farmers, for example, who need rain they may not be.

"So forecasters should just give the temperatures, and say if they are
above or below the yearly average, and let the public decide if they
are good or bad."

That will be, will it not, a change for the better?
