Default New tropical storm

TS Tammy has just formed of the Florida coast.

Only 6 more storms and we get to the end of this years list, has it ever
been done?

Yup, I got it wrong. So I'd say, with about 7 weeks of the season left
(30th November), that we could easily get to the end of the list.

And from the website of the NHC:

In the event that more than 21 named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic
basin in a season, additional storms will take names from the Greek
alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and so on.

In the 1930s apparently. I don't know the exact number. It would be good if
someone could check up on that.

Gavin.

Only 2 more names left (as someone else has pointed out). Since storm
naming started in it's current form, there hasn't been the need to use
more than the 22 names allocated for any particular year.

The storms weren't named in the 1930's. The most active year in that
decade was 1933 with 23 reaching at least tropical storm intensity. At
least that's what is in the archive but the detail was obviously much
less reliable then compared to today.

You can find the full archive for all oceans at

http://weather.unisys.com/hurricane/index.html

The North Atlantic archive goes back to 1851.

From the NHC:

NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
1130 AM EDT WED OCT 5 2005 (1630 BST)

THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER IS ISSUING ADVISORIES ON TROPICAL
STORM TAMMY...LOCATED ABOUT 130 MILES SOUTHEAST OF JACKSONVILLE
FLORIDA.

AN AREA OF DISTURBED WEATHER HAS DEVELOPED OVER AND EAST OF THE
YUCATAN PENINSULA THIS MORNING. THIS SYSTEM IS NOT WELL ORGANIZED
AT THIS TIME...BUT SURFACE PRESSURES ARE LOW IN THE AREA. UPPER-
LEVEL WINDS COULD BECOME FAVORABLE FOR DEVELOPMENT OVER THE NEXT
DAY OR SO AS THE SYSTEM MOVES NORTH-NORTHEASTWARD.

SHOWER ACTIVITY HAS INCREASED WITH A LARGE TROPICAL WAVE LOCATED
ABOUT 1700 MILES EAST OF THE SOUTHERN WINDWARD ISLANDS.

DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM...IF ANY...IS EXPECTED TO BE SLOW TO
OCCUR.
