Don't appear to be caused by mountains..possibly interaction between
different air flows???

Also of interest is the "vortex" NE of Anglesey. It has similar
characteristics of a Von Karmen vortex street.

I raised this very matter recently on my gliding website when in
addition to standard orographic waves, there were apparently wave
clouds over the Atlantic with no mountain triggers at all upwind.

This comment was made by a glider pilot now living in Australia:

"I believe the sort of wave pattern you describe is not uncommon. I've
been soaring in West Australia with a Westerly flow and there are
literally no triggers for thousands of km yet on an 8000' cu base day
the cu slowly aligned cross wind and after a bit of effort I finally
got to 15,000' along with 2 other pilots."

I don't think this is the same phenomenon as the (slightly) better
documented shear wave, but we would all love to find out more.

I wonder what is your reason for saying that the waves do not appear to be
caused by mountains. They are classic orographic waves, caused by the
topography, which is hills and mountains. Each train of waves can be traced
to an individual peak or ridge, if one has the time.
