Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on New Year's Day.

The outlook remains a zonal one, albeit with colder air over Scotland for

things look like remaining unsettled and on the mild side.

High pressure lies to the west of Iberia, leading to westerlies for all.
Westerlies continue to affect the UK at T+144 and T+168 as the high moves
slowly eastwards over France.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html
The Met Office run shows strong to gale force westerlies, due to a ridge
over Biscay and a deep low NE of Iceland. The winds ease slightly at T+144
as the Azores High ridges northwards over Biscay.

Strong westerlies cover the UK with complex low pressure to the north.
850hPa temperatures vary from -8C over NW Scotland to -1C over SW England.
Milder westerlies move over the UK at T+144, followed by WSW'lies at T+168
as a large high moves slowly eastwards over the western Mediterranean.
Westerlies return on day 8, with SW'lies on day 9 from a ridge over the
North Sea. Day 10 sees further SW'lies as a trough moves slowly eastwards
towards the UK.

the UK.

A shallow trough lies to the west of the UK, with a weak ridge over the
Irish Sea. Winds are westerlies and WSW'lies over the UK as a result.

Iberia.
