Having spent 10 years in Aberdeenshire, I noticed we always seemed to get
SE gales in October ( on the coast) , and at the rigs this was usually a
mean of 50 kts. (Brent field).

Is there anything documented about this effect?

I am a regular visitor top the Norwegian Mountains, but I don't remember
them saying anything about good weather in October.

Trevor,

SE Gales are also expected in Cornwall in October, there have been some
memorable one's, and some massive seas. The last being 27th October last
year. The gale wasn't that bad but the sea was absolutely massive and did
a
lot of damage. In October depressions seem to commonly intensify near
Biscay, and move northwards at roughly the same speed as the swell,
developing it all the time. In winter SW gales are more typical. SE gales
then becoming more common again in March.

It did look as if this we might get something nasty in a few days time,
but
it looks less likely now. Still an 8 foot+ swell on north coast beaches
today, together with 19-20 degrees & sunshine, not bad eh!

Graham
