I've had my Davis AWS for 15 months now and I think the battery must be going
even though it is claimed to have a life-span of two years as it keeps losing
signal often. The primary source of power on the ISS wireless Vantage Pro is the
solar panel, unfortunately I have so many days up here with no sunshine just
damp and foggy weather that I think the battery must drain quicker. Does this
sound reasonable ? The console is on main supply.

Hi Will

I am also the proud owner of a Vantage Pro2

http://www.ukjay.co.uk

I have only had mine for a few months though ;-)

Have you tried changing the battery?

also how often is your archive interval? (30mins?)

Good Luck

Ok Will every 10 mins may cause more batt consumption, but I'm not sure how
much more than every 30mins
maybe 3 x as much? LOL
Have you tried maplins for the batt?

Hi Will

I have had a wireless Vantage Pro for about 2 years and a bit. I find
that it is best to change the small 3 Volt battery at the beginning and
the end of the year. They cost about £5-6 pounds and I find the
panasonic the best. I have my archive set at 10 mins, but the biggest
problem has in the past been the loss of signal particularly when it is
foggy, so I purchased a wireless repeater from Weathernet at Bournemouth
and in respect of signal loss, I have never had a problem since.
The other recent problem was a failure of the humidity board which left
the console with a constant reading of 100%, but McMurdo from Portsmouth
kindly replaced FOC.
Oh incidentally I have never changed the fan aspirated batteries and the
fan is still happily flying round despite the manual saying you should
change the motor and batteries every year.
Hope this helps.

Slight mistake
Should have said change batteries at the beginning and end of the winter.

Cheers Alan, sounds good advice. Fog is a real problem up here.

SIM battery life depends on several factors, eg how well exposed the
solar panel may be, sunshine hours and so on. Also worth
double-checking that the solar panel connection to the SIM board is
definitely firmly in place. But there is also some significant
variation in battery life with individual systems and, as someone else
commented, quite a number of users get into the habit of replacing the
battery once a year, as a matter of course.

The lithium battery itself (CR123A) is widely available but in some
places eg Tesco's it's located in the aisle with photographic bits and
pieces rather than general batteries (since this battery is most
commonly used in digital cameras).

Archive interval won't have any effect on SIM battery life - how could
it in a wireless system? [The frequency of data download from the
logger to a PC can shorten the life of batteries in the _console_ if
the console is run on batteries only but of course that's a completely
different issue.]

Feel free to drop me an email if there are any further questions.

Thanks for the reply John and for raising the issue Will. I was beginning to
think about replacing mine as it's nearly been a year.

Hi

John I must admit I didn't wade through all the info I have, it was just
guesswork on the pretext that the
remote unit must draw current on every transmission, I may have got this
confused with updating
/archive interval?

It's a cracking piece of kit and I'm very happy with it, but I haven't got
round to rolling my own software yet :-)
(Then I will need to understand how it works)

As I mentioned I have only just recently acquired my AWS (Thanks John) so
I'd better visit www.weatherstations.co.uk
and be tempted to add some more hardware no doubt?
