Oddly outside in a nearby wood there was no hum
Its like my house acts as a receiver for the hum

Whatever causing the Hum is either propagating through the ground or
air, and it probably resonating the brickwork of your house.

Hope that it stops for you very soon

In some instances at least, could the hum be simply a next door
neighbour's fridge or central heating system? I sometimes hear sounds
at night which emanate from outside the house, and I always put it down
to that.

Having said that, obviously a hum with no next door neighbours would be
a little strange...

I had a hum, once. It was a resonance in the taller than usual
aluminium tube which held the tv aerial. Nothing happened much till
force 5, and then the house rocked. Upwards of f7, nothing was heard.

Thanks for all the replies

the website on the first message is spot on with the description of the hum
being a low frequency resonating diesel type sound having no directional
source and "heard through the base of the rear cranium
