Default Helen, Helen... oh dear oh dear.

At 2:56 pm BBC News 24 finished a chilling report about the thousands
of messages left on the beeb website, mostly full of doom and gloom
from or about people who lost their loved ones in the sunami. It was
presented in genuinely sombre mood and immediately afterwards, they
handed over in an entirely appropriate way to Helen Willets for the
weather.

Cue Helen, all bouncy, bright and breezy - full of the joys of Spring:
"Good afternoon Valerie, good afternoon Peter as well..." beaming
smile "it's getting much milder after today... blahblahblah [who
cared by then?]". Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

Well I'm sorry Helen, I'm not usually one for nitpicking but you
really must keep a close eye on the final news item preceding your
forecast. Either that, or it's a perfect example of why chatty
forecasts should NEVER be prerecorded... the entire weather
presentation looked and felt quite, quite wrong. Very bad form News 24
directors, Helen... or both.

allot of the news 24 weather is pre-recorded and repeated throughout the day
with just a couple of revisions.

?? So, what's wrong with that , good on Helen! for bringing some shine a joy
to our screens, and how pretty she is too bless her. ok 23,000 people
lost their
life, that is terrible anyone will agree, but it is Christmas, and we need
some joyful spirit.

Good on you Helen , I think you're great! )

Dave, the news 24 weather is recorded. It's not live or updated.
So your point, I don't agree entirely. But I'm probably misunderstanding.
Anyway, the way I see it is readers should read the news and weather
forecasters should read the weather. In my opinion, we don't need
newsreaders expressing their emotions... that can be dangerous because then
you get biased expressions etc. I hate all this drama., acting crap. I know,
and feel terrible about what happened, and I don't need all this spoon
feeding by the media. They should do their job and keep their opinions to
themselves.
The News 24 weather is always recored, that's why it's out of date. And yes,
I agree, it doesn't look good when Helen comes on looking all cheery and
happy ... e.g my point.
So, the BBC news 24 is your problem here, not the weather forecaster.

It is? All over and done with surely. It is almost 'new year' however
and I am sure some more spirit will come along with that ... not to
mention wine, beer, etc. etc.. (-:

Gianna talking about alcohol, has your camera been at the Sherry? It seems
to be pointing skywards giving the distinct impression it's fallen over
hic....

I agree - and that's my point - too much fake bright and cheeryness or
sombreness. It just happened to be Helen today but it could have been
anyone who came unstuck, if someone forgot to flick off their "happy"
switch. It was the contrast that made it look awkward but I have to
admit, she's handled it better since the 3pm broadcast. On a day like
today both newsreaders and weather presenters should have played it
absolutely neutrally (neither happy nor miserable), just like the old
days.

What made it worse was that, if it was prerecorded, an attempt was
made to make it look "live" by Helen answering back by name to the two
newsreaders (no doubt following a script). Well that came unstuck,
too. Hopefully, it was an isolated mistake (for a mistake it surely
was).

Apart from 25/12 when I pointed the camera at the ground (to show off my
meagre collection of snow flakes) it always points skywards. That way
the viewer gets to see a nice procession of cloud forms etc. or indeed a
nice blue sky (or the moon when it is in the field of view).

At the moment, regardless of where it is pointing, it should be
displaying a black rectangle as it is dark.

Nothing, but NOTHING compares to the sheer stupidity of that Francis bloke
on Sky News! He kept trying to make his 'forecast' relevant by telling us
that the weather in the areas that were hit by the tsunami were hot "of the
sticky sort". Thanks Francis. I'm sure we are all glad we now know that
and it makes so much difference :-( He then goes on to deliver one of his
trademark forecasts which tend to blow more hot air than actually give us
any indication of what the weather will be like. 'Favourite' moments include
him waving his arms about in the general area of France, Italy, and possibly
the rest of Europe saying "There's some rain around about here". Just HOW
has that guy managed to stay in work?!

Funny that Simon, whilst Francis has a slightly odd manner ,I find his
forecasts and broad pictures very informative ,quite unlike Ms Willets who
strictly follows the party line ,and always with a smile, pretty irritating.
Good job we are all different innit ?
