Furthermore the large warm pool of waters in the North Sea and channel will ameliorate any cold weather from the east for some time to come. The warm North Sea will make cold weather coming in from the East better ?! Joe Thanks Joe - you are right of course to pull me up for slip-shod use of language. For those who hate an icy blast - I suppose you could just about say it has 'improved' (dict def) the weather. Apologies James I see I've been assuming for the past forty-plus years I knew what the word meant - wrongly! I'd been thinking of it meaning something like "to make milder", in the sense of reducing the effect of something unpleasant. Curiously, I see from my dictionary that there may be an excuse for this in that the root "amalos" means "not strong". Isn't that the most desperate example of straw-clutching? Thanks, Joe, for adding to my education. They say you're never too old to learn but, unfortunately, you may be too old to remember it. -- Graham Davis Bracknell |
