Default Today's model interpretation (13/11/05)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for 12z on Thursday. Issued
0533z, 13/11/05.

The models still show a brief northerly plunge followed by a couple of
settled days as high pressure moves over the UK. Beyond that the models are
still greatly different, with some maintaining settled weather (DWD), some
bringing in SE'lies (GFS) and yet others bringing back a form of zonality
(GEM). Even at T+120 there are considerable differences regarding the exact
positioning of the high bringing the UK's ridge, so as ever more runs are
needed.

ECMWF: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Recm1201.gif
The UK lies under a large ridge with light winds for all. The ridge builds
over western France at T+144 with much of the UK remaining under light
winds. Northern Ireland is the exception, with SW'lies ahead of a low to the
NW. The low fills to the south of Ireland at T+168, bringing a mixture of
southerlies and SW'lies over the UK.

MetO: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rukm1201.gif
MetO shows a high atop the UK bringing light winds for most. There's a
southerly breeze for Northern Ireland and western cotland, with light
NE'lies for SE England. The high rotates and builds at T+144, bringing
further light winds to England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland lie
under westerlies, with low pressure east of the Faroes.

GFS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rtavn1201.gif
GFS also shows a ridge over much of the UK, although a weak trough brings
brisk northerlies over East Anglia and SE England. The parent high lies to
the north and by T+144 it builds and ridges towards Scandinavia. A ridge
still covers the UK and the weak trough moves eastwards, leaving all areas
under light winds. The high merges with the Russian High at T+168, allowing
low pressure to the SW to bring SE'lies across much of the UK.

GEM: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rgem1201.gif
The Canadian run shows light winds for most areas due to a ridge, although
eastern areas lie under a weak trough and northerlies.

GME/DWD:
http://www.wetter.com/home/img/sat/g...130000_120.gif
As with GEM and GFS, a ridge brings light winds to many areas. The eastern
half of England and the far east of Scotland lie under northerlies. The high
builds over the Celtic Sea at T+144, introducing SW'lies for Northern
Ireland and Scotland. By T+168 the high ridges strongly over Scandinavia,
linking with the Russian high. Winds are light across the cloudy UK.

JMA: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rjma1201.gif
The Japanese run shows northerlies for eastern England with a ridge over
Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The ridge sinks SE'wards at T+144,
allowing a trough to push across the UK. Winds are a mixture of westerlies
and SW'lies as a result.

NOGAPS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rngp1201.gif
NOGAPS brings a ridge and light winds over the UK. The ridge builds at
T+144, although with a trough to the NW winds become SSW'lies over Scotland,
Wales and Northern Ireland.

KMA: http://www.kma.go.kr/kma03/gif/g21nh_smsr_120.gif
SW'lies cover the UK, which lies between a high to the SW and a low to the
NW.

MM5 snow forecast:
http://rain.mmm.ucar.edu/mm5/plots/n...snoc.hr120.gif
No snow is forecast to lie over the UK at T+120.
