Just been down to Copley Mill to do the obs. 24hr to 09Z today, 19th

Copley Met O site Max 6.4C Min -3.7C 09Z 1.7C Grass Min -10.1C
Copley Lead Mill Max -0.4C Min -4.9C 09Z -4.5C

So, first ice day at The Mill! Pics on p.5 show what the Copley-ites
down there have to put up with when the wind falls below F3. It may
also explain why swmbo (and most other villagers) refuse to move there!
Frosts and snow linger much longer and the sun doesn't shine from
November - February.

Minima seem to be following the normal valley trend, around 3C lower
under moderate breezes, 1.5C lower under calms and around the same in
normal Copley winds.

This has been the first ideal day for daytime cold air ponding and a
6.8C difference in max seems pretty impressive to me! It normally
doesn't get chance to manifest itself as the wind, which is common
here, stirs the cold air up. This morning is calm at the Mill and -4.5C
at 09Z and NW 7 knots(F3) +1.7C at Copley Met O site.

Anyone interested can follow progress on p1 & p8 of the website. It
really does show how localised, and perhaps unrepresentative, these
valley bottom sites are. However, there are four houses there, so it is
representative to them, their cars and their garden plants.
