I came across this old photograph I had taken of the TV screen circa
1954 or 55 (probably February 1955)

http://www.itadvice.co.uk/weatherjack/TV-fcst-1955.jpg

It is reassuring just how much clearer the graphics are today (???!!!)

The presenter (arms waving) looks remarkable like today's Desperate Dan
- his grandfather perhaps?

Jack

50 years later and advancing technology has got rid of the pressure
chart and given us a weather experience instead.... what's the
crosshatching, fog, rain??

.... given the synoptic situation & time of year, looks like the
predicted (or possibly actual) extent of North Sea stratus and/or
thicker Sc with convective element sufficiently deep to give snow
grains, drizzle or similar.

It's probably Tom Clifton, who with George Cowling formed the first BBC
TV weather team.

Tom was an instructor at the Met Office Training School, then based at
RAF Barnwood in Gloucester. His son went to the same primary school as
me and used to bring in some of the old maps.

That is really cool Jack. I find myself thinking that would be an
improvement on the current BBC efforts ... and as for Dan ... perhaps he
will become a saint like his twin brother, Vitus.

Didn't realise Mr Corbett was so old! Good to see his Norwegian hatchets
spreading in from the East. You'll definitely need a sturdy umbrella and a
warm coat with numbers between an italicised 1 and 1111.

So much information squeezed into 405 line monochrome :-)
I bet the forecaster got the facts over better then than they do now.

I have a foggy (sorry but it is a bit outside) memory that one of the
forecasters said that they had to convey the information with regard for
those with limited eyesight. So you didn't get silly comments like "...
and you can see it's raining over here in the east ...". Oh for proper
contextual information and a bit less pantomime.

Yeah yeah...OK . But, What were the Numbers?

Must have been great back in the days before all our brains atrophied.
