1200 WNW F1-2 9000 BR FU 7/SMOKE 1/SC T024D011
RMK: The character of the elevated smoke varies from very thin veils
(sun shining strongly through) to markedly dense, billowed shapes -
these latter to the north (nearer the source), where I estimate some
genuine Sc (smoke-element induced) is located. Also visible above the
smoke is cirrus - sun shining, but general light level much reduced from
what would be expected this time. Can smell smoke in air (and we are
some considerable distance away).
Source of smoke can be seen clearly now with thick smoke plume rising
and shearing southeast, before being picked up by the lower-tropospheric
flow and feeding the general smoke veil overhead. Like something out of
'Lord of the Rings'!=

RMK: The elevated smoke plume was slowly thinning / moving away from
the north over the past 3 hours - there always had been a distinct
northern edge to it, and as far as I can tell, it is not now in the
vicinity. Stars/moon shining reasonably brightly.
[ DAYTIME DATA (09Z - 18Z):
screen max: 04.4 precipitation: 0.1
other data: precipitation noted is from hoar-frost melt. I suspect that
the max. temp. should have been a couple of degrees higher, but during
the max. insolation part of the day, we were blanketed by the smoke veil
above. ]=
