Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on New Year's Day.
Issued 0557, 28/12/05. The models show a changable period for the start of the new year with transitory ridges and troughs moving across the UK. NW'lies look likely for most areas on New Year's Day, followed by drier weather as a ridge moves in from the west. ECMWF: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Recm1201.gif Low pressure covers the North Sea, leading to NW'lies for the UK. A transitory ridge moves eastwards at T+144, bringing a mixture of WSW'lies and SW'lies to the UK. SW'lies cover much of the UK at T+168 as a secondary low passes close to Scotland. MetO: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rukm1201.gif MetO shows moderate westerlies for Scotland due to a low to the north. Elsewhere winds are lighter westerlies or WNW'lies, followed by SSW'lies and southerlies across the UK at T+144 as a trough crosses the British Isles. GFS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rtavn1201.png GFS shows a ridge over the UK, leading to NNW'lies across most areas. The ridge moves SE'wards at T+144 as a trough pushes eastwards over Northern Ireland. Winds there are westerlies with SW'lies elsewhere. By T+168 another ridge approaches the UK from the west with light northerlies or NW'lies as a result. GEM: http://meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120.html The Canadian output shows NW'lies for all with low pressure to the east of Scotland. GME/DWD: http://www.wetter.com/home/img/sat/g...270000_120.gif DWD is very similar to GEM in that a low is centred east of Scotland, leading to NW'lies across the UK. A trough moves in from the west at T+144 to bring SW'lies, followed by NW'lies at T+168 as the trough moves over the North Sea. JMA: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rjma1201.gif The Japanese run shows NW'lies for all with a low over the North Sea. A trough moves eastwards at T+144, introducing SW'lies across the UK. NOGAPS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/ngp10.prp.120.europeg.gif NOGAPS shows a large low over France bringing NE'lies for all. The winds fall light at T+144 as the UK lies under a ridge. KMA: http://www.kma.go.kr/kma03/gif/g21nh_smsr_120.gif The Korean run shows a ridge to the west and NW'lies for the UK. |
