Default Today's model interpretation (29/12/05)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Monday. Issued 0557,
29/12/05.

The models continue to show a changeable period for the UK. The week will
start with low pressure near Iceland and a westerly or SW'ly flow for the
UK, but it's quite likely the low will transfer SE'wards as pressure builds
to the NE. The models differ greatly regarding the details though so
confidence beyond that is low. GFS develops an easterly, albeit not as
potent as the current spell. The GFS ensembles show 5 of 11 runs in favour
of an easterly setting in for London, so it's very much in the balance. As
ever, more runs are needed.

ECMWF: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Recm1201.gif
A ridge covers the UK, bringing WSW'lies to England and Wales with SW'lies
elsewhere. A trough moves over the North Sea at T+144, leading to NNW'lies
for most, followed by further SW'lies at T+168 as a ridge topples over the
UK.

MetO: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rukm1201.gif
MetO shows a trough over Scotland and Northern Ireland, leading to SW'lies
across the UK. Low pressure moves swiftly SE'wards over the North Sea at
T+144, bringing a mixture of northerlies and NW'lies to the UK.

GFS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rtavn1201.png
SW'lies and SSW'lies cover the UK, with a trough over Ireland and a ridge
over France. The trough develops into a low over France at T+144, leaving to
NW'lies for most areas. Northern Scotland is the exception, with easterlies
there. High pressure builds over Scandinavia at T+168 and that brings
further easterlies to Scotland. Northern Ireland lies under a col, whilst
England and Wales are affected by northerlies from a low over the southern
North Sea.

GEM: http://meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120.html
The Canadian output shows a deep low west of Iceland and high pressure west
of Iberia. A trough covers Ireland, leading to westerlies for Northern
Ireland and WSW'lies over the rest of the UK.

GME/DWD:

DWD is similar to GFS, with a trough to the west and a mixture of SSW'lies
and SW'lies as a result. At T+144 the trough moves SE'wards and forms a low
to the SE, leaving the UK under NW'lies. T+168 sees another trough cross the
UK with westerlies and WNW'lies as a result.

JMA: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rjma1201.gif
The Japanese run shows SW'lies as a trough approaches from the west. The
trough moves across the UK at T+144, leaving westerlies in its wake.

NOGAPS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/ngp10.prp.120.europeg.gif
NOGAPS shows westerlies for most with complex low pressure near Iceland and
a large high to the SW.

KMA: http://www.kma.go.kr/kma03/gif/g21nh_smsr_120.gif
The Korean run also shows low pressure near Iceland and westerlies for the
UK.
