That wasn't the problem in this case. The referee was happy that the
pitch was playable, but called off the match AIUI on advice (from the
police?) that the access routes to the ground were too dangerous.

Much more dangerous *after* the postponement, with several thousand
mightily ****ed-off Charlton fans around, I'd have thought!

No, the referee was happy that the pitch was playable. The club called
the match off on safety due to conditions outside of the ground.

They didn't at Bolton, with a sugar dusting of snow but then the under
soil heating had also failed and the pitch was rock hard. At least
that match was cancelled at a reasonable time, about 1500 for an
evening kick off. We, erm, "slowed down" the rig for the TV coverage
when we spotted all these suits in the middle of the pitch looking
worried just after 1400. B-)

Newcastle would have been fully rigged and ready to go by the time the
match was cancelled. Talking to people who where there it was a bit
slippy under foot outside the ground and little/no road treatment had
taken place.
