Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Thursday. Issued
0549, New Year's Day 2006. The models show a trough crossing the UK towards the end of the week with rain likely in most places. There's still an outside chance of a brief easterly interlude (eg the operational GFS) but most of the models keep the cold air away from the UK. ECMWF: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Recm1201.gif A ridge lies to the west and a trough covers East Anglia and SE England, leading to northerlies for most. The ridge builds over the UK at T+144 to bring light winds for many areas; the exceptions are Northern Ireland and NW Scotland which lie under SW'lies. Southerlies associated with a trough over Ireland affect much of the UK at T+168. MetO: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rukm1201.gif Unavailable today. GFS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rtavn1201.png England and Wales lie under easterlies due to a ridge from a large high over NW Russia. Scotland and Northern Ireland are affected by southerlies, followed by a mixture of southerlies and SE'lies at T+144 as a trough moves in from the west. By T+168 southerlies and SSW'lies cover the UK with a deep low to the WSW. GEM: http://meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120.html The Canadian output shows a trough over the North Sea and WSW'lies across the UK. GME/DWD: http://www.wetter.com/home/img/sat/g...010000_120.gif DWD shows a trough over the UK with westerlies for most areas. Another trough moves over the UK at T+144 with SW'lies in advance and westerlies following behind. JMA: http://217.160.75.104/pics/Rjma1201.gif The Japanese run shows southerlies for most due to a trough over Ireland. Winds become light and variable at T+144 as a ridge builds over the UK. NOGAPS: http://217.160.75.104/pics/ngp10.prp.120.europeg.gif A trough lies over the Irish Sea, resulting in westerlies for Northern Ireland and SSW'lies elsewhere. KMA: http://www.kma.go.kr/kma03/gif/g21nh_smsr_120.gif The Korean run shows a ridge over England and Wales bringing light winds. Elsewhere winds are SW'lies. |
