This may be a rumour but I've heard the Met Office are about to put out
a warning that it will be the coldest night of the year so far tonight.

I posted a similar comment about the hottest/coldest/etc on an earlier
New Year's Day (2004 perhaps?)

It's obviously a very well known joke as my 13 year daughter sprung it
on me today.

I'm reminded of 3 January 1990, when one of the Canberra TV stations
breathlessly announced that that day's maximum of 39.7 C was 'the
hottest day this decade'.

Mind you, it wasn't until 1998 that it was surpassed....

Mind you, it wasn't until 1998 that it was surpassed....

That would have been the next decade. As there was no Year Zero,
centuries run from 1-100 and decades from 1-10. So 3 January, 1990
should have been the hottest day since the beginning of 1981 for it to
have been the hottest day of the decade.
